My Entrepreneur Endeavors
I have started 3 different startups which have all been niches. I saw a market need and I created a solution. Growing businesses organically has been challenging. But my most exciting jobs have been the ones I have started in businesses with exciting possibilities. Here are the two in the past and the next section will detail my current venture.
Pantry Express
1995-96 - Austin TX Business Plan, Lack of Funding for Capital Expenses
Pantry Express is an old concept with a new high tech twist. Customers order groceries and receive goods by delivery or pickup without entering a physical store. Pantry Express utilizes bar coding technology, inventory techniques, telephones, faxes and the Internet to give customers quick, personable service. Pantry Express will be successful because we will meet a niche need not currently serviced and we will do it with low operating costs. Compared to a traditional grocery store, our stores will be 30% the size, with 50% the square footage cost, 50% of the insurance costs, and operate with 30% the salary expense. This grocery store niche was in concept before any of the current online grocery store solutions. This is a more efficient solution using its own location, inventory turns of 30x a year, first in first out inventory, limited stock selections but of high quality, local produce, employees picking the groceries then moving the cart into a refrigerated room to await pick up. The customer would order online, select a time, drive to pickup and the groceries would be loaded into the car for them.
BackyardView
2006-08 - Orange County, CA - Closed due to Production Issues
BackyardView was a niche solution. We created windows for the windowless.
Backyard View created faux windows with a calming backyard view. It’s products are lighter weight reproductions of windows with various garden views. The windows are created with quality materials, glass, and graphic reprints. Customers can choose between various sizes, color and prints. Products are made with standard sizes and pictures. Custom sizes and prints will be done when requested. Each product is be engraved with a serial number for authenticity.
Backyard View was created to fill a market niche. Many customers have rooms with interior walls. These include bathrooms, hallways, and office spaces. Windows provide a calming, tranquil, open effect to the viewer. They become focal points for creative thought, daydreaming and inspiration. Backyard View’s products help eliminate the closed in feeling.
2024 - Current Erie, Colorado
Pet Guardians who protect your pet when you cannot. This is a niche business. I discovered a need for this business for single pet owners to take care of the pet when the owner has an emergency.
